Abuse Survivor Offers Tips For Alternative Punishments

By Ginny Grimsley

Esther Joseph doesn’t need to read studies or statistics to understand the problems of child abuse. She survived it.

Joseph, an advocate against corporal punishment in the home, spent her childhood alternately suffering physical abuse from her mother and emotional abuse from her father. But she doesn’t consider herself a victim.

“I’m a survivor of child abuse,” said Joseph, author of Memories of Hell, Visions of Heaven—A Story of Survival Transformation and Hope (www.unityinherited.com). “In overcoming the damage of an upbringing riddled with violence, I was adamant that I would not grow up to be an abuser, as well. I know the dangers of striking a child to discipline them and then explaining that you’re doing it for their own good and because you love them. All that does is teach the child that violence is an acceptable part of love, and as they grow up, they accept violence in their adult relationships because they’ve been taught that it’s completely normal.”

Joseph believes that discipline is important, but that it can be delivered without making violence an acceptable part of life. (more…)

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Today I want to share a new web site with you.  Check out Carrie’s site and tell me what you think.

Chockababy: a community of gushing parents and grandparents, friends, neighbors, and families. Here is your family’s new online home. I received this email this morning.

Hi Dianne!

Thanks for your contributions to moms and our need for support from each other! I am emailing you today to see if you would want to share a new website with your readers. My name is Carrie. My sister, Nicky, and I started an online, sharable baby book called chockababy.com We are two sisters who are moms (mine are 4 and 1, Nicky has 2 year old twin boys). We didn’t love the options we had for tracking our babies’ milestones and sharing updates with our families. So in the midst of motherhood and part-time jobs, we have started Chockababy (pronounced Cha-kuh-baby). We think your readers would appreciate the features of this site and the user-friendliness for super-busy moms.

Declutter From Scratch

Monday, July 18th, 2011

I am a big fan of Mini’s book Declutter Fast and her great emails. If you have not heard of her before please check her out. You will be glad you  did. Make sure you sign up fro her email. She gives such great information in her emails. I love to receive them. I am sharing with you one of her strategies that really works for me. I live where this time of the year we are cooped up inside, because  it is sooooooooooooo hot.  So this is when I deep clean my house and do home repairs. I follow Mini’s,  Declutter from Scratch plan, one room at a time. There are days when I can’t use my garage but it is total worth it. This may seem like a lot of work but I think that is why it works for me. When the room is empty I clean it thoroughly, I do all repairs that are needed. When it is time to put things back I only want to move back in the things I really want.

Declutter From Scratch from Mini Tanner

A great way to declutter is to take each room – or an entire home – and start from scratch.

This is a way that works for me, that I have put into practice numerous times. It’s one of my favorite ways to declutter. (more…)

Our Finger Sucking Journey

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

To start our journey of finger sucking I am going to start from the very beginning.  When our oldest daughter was born my husband decided NO binkies were allowed.  I didn’t question this decision he has a son and I figured he knew something I didn’t.   At 4 months old on the very same day I pierced my daughters ears she started sucking her 2 middle fingers.  At the time this was cute, adorable even.  This habit was her way of soothing herself.   (more…)

How to Help Clean Your Dishes

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

A few months ago a new law went into effect that banned phosphates from dishwashing detergent in 17 states, is your state one of them?. It may help the environment, but it’s making it harder to get clean dishes for your family. Who wants a product that makes your life harder?

“For the last month and a half my dishes just weren’t getting clean,” Lorinda Loveridge said.

When her dishes came out with a film on them, Loveridge’s initial thought was that her dishwasher needed to be replaced.

“I think anybody would, for those of us who didn’t know what was going on, especially if you didn’t switch detergent,” she said. “What else would you think it was?”

Marilyn Albertson, with the Utah State University Cooperative Extension Office, frequently gets calls from consumers wanting to know why their dishes are suddenly so dirty.

“It has changed the way people do dishes, and it has caused frustration out there,” Albertson said. Us moms do not need any more frustrations. (more…)
